I wondered if any technical forum members might be able to help me work out what has happened with my FX DRS?

I picked it up yesterday and put around 100 pellets through it before I got this weird leak after every shot.
This occurred right the way down from 200 bar and ended up draining the reservoir.

Now, when I try and fill the DRS again, air just leaks out of the small hole on the front right side of the block.

The great @jeffsky (my word that mans channel is a handy resource 🤝) called the hole an "atmospheric bleed hole" (I have one of those 💨).
In his video, Jeff said it could be either the o-ring at the bottom of the piston, the one inside the regulator body or the body o-ring itself.

Not sure if its related but when I could fill the rifle, I have to open the bleed line screw on my pump very quickly in order for the reservoir valve to close. If I don't it just drains the reservoir. Could be sticky valves?

Questions:
  1. Is anybody able to confirm Jeff's diagnosis this based on the footage?
  2. The DRS has an anti-tamper on the regulator adjuster bolt, which I would have to take out before I can take the regulator out to check the o-ring condition. Is there any guidance on how to do this?
  3. Once I get the regulator out, what am I looking for in terms of damage or causes?
  4. Where can I get the o-rings required to repair the regulator/ block? (assuming that is the cause)

The air rifle was shooting great up to this point and I was impressed with the accuracy so far. The shop I purchased it from is a long drive (hours) away and I would like to avoid having to go through the return if possible, as I have read on these forums that repair/ fix times from FX can be quite long. I also want to learn about repairing too!
If all else fails I might just have to return it to the shop for a repair - I am a bit disappointed to have run into issues so quick.

Thanks for reading - any help or advice would be appreciated. 🙏

As it happens in correlation with a shot, I would assume that it has to do with the valve and/or valve seat.

Edit: If that is the case, it would leak Air through the barrel.

Reg rebuild kit is on the bay , includes the tools to do the job , the anti tamper ball can easily be removed with a hot pick , stab the plastic ball and pull it out

Ah ok, thanks for this - I didn't know there was a pre-made kit! This might be worth an attempt. I reckon this might invalidate the warranty so hopefully it works!

Also, the hammer seems to be floating around in the block. When I tilt the gun barrel down and barrel up you can hear the clink of the hammer moving around - is this normal? I don't remember this noise when I picked up the air rifle 2 days ago but then again, I have only had it 2 days so might have missed it.

Not sure if the DRS has a floating hammer , @Mr Bond has had a couple ?

I haven't had air leak out of the barrel yet when filling. When the rifle was firing, the valve was open for way too long though! I wonder if it just has sticky valves that won't close properly. This would confirm the difficult filling situation.

The valve would be one explanation. If it stays (partly) open, you can´t fill the "tank", but as I said: If it is the valve, the air would bleed through the barrel.
If it !only! bleeds through the vent hole, it probably has to do with the regulator. If it does both, your guns has more then one issue.

Can you recall where the air bleed has happend during your video? It sounds like so much air, that I had assumed it must have escaped through the barrel (also that it happend right after a shot), but ofc the video sound might be deceptive. So it could also have been the vent hole, every time the reg cycles...

Long story short: If no air escapes through the barrel, I would look at the regulator seals first.

If it's under warranty take it back but my guess is the reg isn't recovering fast enough and is letting air past the firing valve until the reg builds enough pressure to seat the firing valve properly again .

Since the (floating) hammer does not touch the valve, the valve return spring should be enough to close the valve even without pressure. Atleast on my DRS it is absolutely no problem to fill up the tank from zero pressure with a hand pump, no matter the reg set pressure.

The air through the block is a blown reg oring.

The hammer is floating

If you dry fired when the cylinder is empty, if its like mine, the valve needs to be reset. If you try to out air in before its reset it blows a orig on the reg.

I bought mine 4 days ago similar thing just happend to me, filled the tun to 200 bar last night came to it this morning 0 bar tried to fill it and it’s leaking out the same little hole you mentioned, I took it apart couldn’t see any O ring damage regressed out back together filled it back up and it held air just as I was sat there on my phone it popped and dumped all the air out of the hole again

Ah ok, thank you - this is helpful!
During the video I could only hear air coming from the barrel. Whatever lets air out of the barrel ended up staying open till the reservoir was drained.
I only noticed the atmospheric bleed hole letting out air when I tried to fill the rifle again. I plugged my finger over the end of the barrel whilst trying to fill to see if the pressure built (thus air was leaking out the barrel) and there was none.

Got it, how do you make sure the valve is reset? I'd like to make sure so that I can try isolate the issue.

Interesting! I wonder if we are part of a 'bad batch' where some o-rings were improperly fitted or something similar. Thanks for reporting! I will be back at the shop to take a look at a new one tomorrow (likely the same batch), so we will be able to know for sure if the same issue pops up.

Crawley Surplus Store have been pretty good over the phone so far and even sounded willing for me to take a crack at doing the o-ring replacement, however, given that there would be a couple of issues (noted by @mantra and others) I think it might be prudent to take it back after all (in spite of the long drive). Their tech will give it a look over and see if they can see the issue too. Otherwise they have said they are happy to swap it out.

I'll update the thread with what the outcome is (y)

If you look at this post here

Post in thread 'FX DRS - Well, I'm going in....' https://airgunforums.co.uk/threads/fx-drs-well-im-going-in.178305/post-2826842

I have taken the cracked the manometer open to bleed the gun and taken barrel bottle shroud thing off and you can see the brass reg on the left, and the steel end of the valve poppet in the black valve on the right.

I have to unscrew the cap, lift out the top hat, spring and poppet and put them back in and tighten up. I believe newer ones dont have the same valve assembly so it isnt a concern for many.

Then meaure with digital calipers how much the reg adjuster screw protrudes, undo the reg adjuster and then unscrew the reg itself and replace the oring and reset to previous.

Finally you might need to replace tge orings on the filling adapter. Sometimes it blows mine (when you try and fill).

Its not diffivult at all, it really isnt. Just tedious.

Oh. And i have to cock the gun when filling from empty i think. That maybe just bottle v compressor though.

I wish I had read this thread earlier - it was hilarious (and a useful read)! :ROFLMAO: At least you managed to salvage your DRS Matt, even if it nearly ended up in the sea!

I ended up taking it back to @CrawleySurplusStore this afternoon and, per their reputation, they were stellar about sorting a replacement - I will be shopping with them again for sure. I went through the issues with their tech and he confirmed the leak. @Louis256 their tech said that leaks were pretty uncommon (he would know given he had 3 DRS), but I suppose they can happen in any PCP.

Finally, I can confirm that a brand new DRS straight out of the box has a rattling hammer. Thanks all

Do you know what the final issues were with your gun?
