HW30 - My journey so far

Thanks, Neil. I've documented my findings and my thoughts/findings, as I see them. A more adept craftsman would probably have much better success and in a shorter time frame than I. If I'm honest, had I known what was involved and the potential knock-on issues, I would have shipped it straight to one of our resident wizards to work their magic. Still, it's been a learning curve...
And you have given me the courage to do a overhaul of mine. I prob would have gone the costly RFD route otherwise. 👍

Oh wow! With great power comes great... responsibility? In this case, if it all goes wrong, I'm NOT responsible! 😅

I would strongly recommend reading as many accounts of the 'surgical procedure' as you can, just to be sure. It's 'finicky' but rewarding :giggle:

Just managed to drop this lpvo onto mine and it's the best compromise I've found. I saw someone else running a similar set up so not my handy work but it's brilliant

Great Garden gun. The Niko sterling it replaces will feature on the remington pest controller for fun because I can't see the iron sights 😵‍💫

TR158 has really got the measure of these. I don't have the knowledge but this has made this gun really point able albeit a bit heavier. Bit of a trade off

Thank you, that's a very generous vote of confidence. In reality, I merely stood on the shoulders of some of our AGF geniuses and heeded their advice :giggle:

Just found this write up and what an excellent write up it is.

Also, from an earlier post of mine asking for help re my TX200 is too heavy for me your suggestion was for a HW30 backed up by other members on here I put a HW30 on order yesterday. Thank you so much for your help, what a great site this is.

One last ask, what scope do you recommend?

Costs me money but who cares, life’s too short.(y)

You're most welcome, and thank you :)

Scope wise... that's going to be a very personal choice, and dependent upon what you intend to use the rifle for (hunting, target, plinking)?

I use mine for light target and plinking, so size and weight aren't really an issue for me, although the slightly more diminutive proportions of the HW30 and, of course, the loading method dictate that you can't use a 'larger scope'.

The most popular choice tends to be the Hawke Airmax (or Vantage) 2-7x32. However, I favour the Vector Veyron compact range of scopes, the largest of which is the 6-24x44 and is only a few mm longer than the Hawke. The 4-16 and 3-12 variants are shorter still. All three are available in both SFP and FFP (mine are SFP), and I find the glass to be excellent for the money. I settled on the 6-24 for the additional magnification, but you may find that a lower mag suits you better.

Below are a couple of photos of the 3-12 and 6-24 variants of the Vector Veyron on my HW30.

Thanks for your quick reply. I’m old but new to the sport, used to shoot as a kid but that’s a long time ago. So, as I am retired thought, I’d try something different.
I think I will be shooting in my back garden mostly, may go to a range, but looks like they all got fancy setups and don’t want to look like an idiot. I fancy the shorter scope yours look great.
Just need to study on the galling, think its bad that a new rifle should be still be affected with this problem.(y)

@dj1 ..." Look like an idiot" ? A fella with a rifle of any outlay cost, enjoying his chosen hobby, is not now, nor ever will be " looking like an idiot". A whole lot of " true idiots" buy all the kit & have no clue how to use it - thinking the kit will make up for/ fill in for their own shortcomings... You just go ahead on down the range , if the notion takes you & " run what ya brung" & have a good time.👍👍👍🙂.

My pleasure. With regards to the galling issue... I'm not convinced that it's actually a major issue per se, that is, I haven't yet heard of a HW30 that has actually 'eaten' itself. The consensus, from my research anyway, suggests that the cocking arm finds a natural setting point and everything settles down. There's no harm in addressing it however.

Exactly this Chris 👍

Hi mate,

I can assure you you won’t look like an idiot. I see your based in West Yorkshire. There are quite a few good ranges around and if you every fancy going to one but down want to go by yourself, give me a shout and I will meet you there. Also if you ever get stuck with the galling issue I might be able to give you a hand if you are local to me or if you need any other help with it or setting it up etc. I have 3 hw30s in my collection. 1 has never galled, and one galled everywhere it could. The other was slight so you could get lucky but if not it’s an easy fix. As for scopes… it depends on what you want to do. Plinking cans in the garden or rats etc a 2-7x32 would do you great. Something like a little wolf fireball would get you started or a Hawke vantage/ air max. If you want to push it out slightly further something like a 3-9x40ao. Nikkosterling or Hawke Fastmount are great for this. If you do fancy a but more pression and visit a range more or want to do longer distance target shooting a 4-12 or 4-16 would do you great. My little 30 will do anything my PCPs will do at the end of the range I often go to although the 8mm bell target holes are not as easy to see with a 3-9x40 on.

Hi Hollowpoint

Thank you for your detailed info and for your very kind offers of help, very much appreciated.(y)

I have not yet been to a range just been messing in my back garden and trying to be very quiet in doing so! I have seen reports on here of police turning up due to neighbours etc, :oops:does scares me a bit, as the wife would go bonkers, but I’m going to carry on.

May I ask what ranges to you go to?

Cheers
