Good Day Hive Mind.

I appear to have accidentally got a friend hooked on shooting.

He’s been using my rifles for a few months and the other night it took him with me out of a night shoot ( don’t worry no further mention of H@nting ).

He is now wanting to get his own rifle. And I am hoping to get some help in gathering info on rifles to recommend to him.

He’s coming out the wrong end of a divorce and as such is likely to be looking towards 2nd hand or the more budget end of the spectrum.

I have an unhealthy taste for bull pups but I am aware that PCPs also come in extra long with better triggers and TBH I have limited experience with them. As I don’t want him to be constrained by my proclivities as such I’d like advice from a wider audience to give him the best choice.

We WILL obviously being going to some local shops to try fit and feel but any advice would be appreciated.

Some prerequisites :

This would be used for plinking and informal target, but also for Rabbits ( when ready with all relevant GL and ability that applies )

PCP
Ideally .177 calibre
Needs to be accurate obviously
Reliable
Ideally a Pic Rail but not the end of the world, dovetail converters are a thing ;-)

His ideal theoretical budget for rifle only is around £400.

Either decent budget rifle or preloved higher end one.

I was thinking of steering towards a Kral puncher 2nd hand ( see what I mean about bull pups ) but I’ve heard those can need some fettling to get the best from them ( this may or may not be true )

Any advice welcome

If he is going for a PCP then you will also need to factor in the cost of any charging equipment.
Unless he uses yours?

He’s aware the £400 is for the rifle only Tthe sight , tank / pump and other bits and bobs are all sorted

He’s picking up a V1 Zulus to allow for night time use and I’ve got a lovely spare vortex for him to play with too.

Edited to make post clearer

GX-40, Phox.

Bit stayed, and no lookers but seem to work from the off, with no fettling beyond a small screw to improve the trigger release.
I've been out loads with my GX-40 on the rats and it has always been great. Mine even works with almost any pellet, so cheap to feed.

--edit--
Eaglevision PDRA-100-13 for the rail

Thanks that’s a good shout I have a friend with one so I might be able to let him have a hands on with one fairly easy.

I’ll add it to the hopefully growing list

Hiya mate,
A 2nd hand BSA Ultra SE or CLX is worth a look at- lightish weight, reasonably compact & accurate though only around 45 shots per fill for the SE & around 60 for the CLX.
A 2nd hand BSA Scorpion- a bit longer & heavier than the Ultra but probably double the shot count.
A 2nd hand Air Arms S400/410 though i've no experience of these.
Otherwise your into Turkish gun territory, something like a kral Puncher Breaker, Reximex Myth or Lyra K- all not bad guns but as you already said they do benefit from a bit of fettling

Rick😜

I recently purchased a Myth. It's a fine rifle with a plentiful air supply having both tube and bottle. Nice balance and feel, not too heavy. Accurate and not particularly pellet fussy.

Some good shouts here, the Phox is budget friendly but not the nicest to shoot, stuff like the Ultra is again within budget, but not as accurate as I’d want in my experience due to its low shot count changing the POI relatively quickly. An S410 is probably over budget, but for the sake of £100 I’d wait a month and get one of those TBH ;)

Agree with the above post 👍 The Myth is a great value rifle, excellent for the price point, just needs a mod as it’s loud without one!

Myth is great, Phox too but don’t discount the AP900. It’s getting good feedback on here, it’s regulated, has a pic rail and cost near £350.

I wasn’t aware of the ap900 I looked at some videos and that stock doesn’t fill me with confidence looks at bit wobbly !!

have you completely ruled out a break barrel (hw 80, 95 or 99) with practice your get a second shot in pretty quick .
for pcp a stirrup pump can be a cheap option to fill .
as said first choice AA any thing ,next bsa ultra /scorpion or gamo coyote gx** also consider maybe a snowpeak ap900 or 1000 seem to get good reviews
( edit i didnt read the bit above about the snow peaks )

I had already seen that but thanks for trying ;-)

I was going to show him this but as you say I suspect he’ll aim more towards multi shot, but you never know , I take it your PM didn’t come to anything ;-)
