I'm doing an early boil up this morning of the blacking tanks and I thank my lucky stars for PPE. I know some people find it annoying and in the way sometimes but not today.
I was stirring the tanks and checking it as I was coming up to temperature when the glass topped thermometer exploded. It showered me in glass and 295 deg f caustic.
Fortunately I had my full face mask, gloves and rubber apron on. A few small bits got past and have dropped down my neck and collar but bloody hell my heart stopped.
Note to me don't let the salts hit the thermometer.

It would be a much different thread of I was not wearing it that's for sure.

Being someone who suffered serious eye injuries 30 odd years ago I absolutely push and urge the use of eye protection.
On another note, I've had the glass "pop" on top of thermometers just like that. In our case the manufacturer had "cheapened" out his process and replace the specified borosilicate glass with plain. Not good when you're up in the hundreds of degrees C.
Lucky stars today Andrew 😉

And a bloody good reminder for us all👍

At work H&S regularly show shockingly graphic photos of damaged eyes and lacerated limbs (even to Office workers) as a reminder of what happens when correct PPE is not used.

Well done on using yours and glad to hear that you lived to tell the tale.

This a Brownells one, I would have expected better. It is 2mm or more thick but not safety glass.
