The difference a piston seal can make

You might have sent extensions to Andy? Don’t know mate? But I definitely sent you some seals as I’m reading our comms and you telling me they don’t fit, which I was trying to make you aware of.

Not sure why, but they fit actual piston heads perfectly but the extension pushes the side walls out a smidge - thus the sealing face in.

Chuck me a DM mate
DM's a good idea

Put a few more through the 97 today and its crept up a bit, as the HW seal is bedding in

So out with the tools and took a fraction more off the spring. I can feel a slight change in the shot cycle, with the small reduction in preload, but it's nice
Planning to zero it and plot it out Sunday, before I decide whether I'm going to go change anything else

What fps is it running now?

I’m having some fun with my 95 currently… As it came to me (used) it appeared standard and quite twangy.

First off I tried another cut down old 95 spring I had, no top hat and an old TBT guide. It was very quiet and pretty consistent in MV terms, but I couldn’t shoot it terribly consistently.

Then installed one of Nick’s kits with 10mm short stroke and Brit Seals at the same time. Too close to the limit for my liking with a brand new seal… As Nick rightly says, I changed too much at once to be able to determine outcomes. Didn’t want to jump into cutting the spring.

Removed slip washer and liner to try and reduce preload before chopping spring, less power but I wasn’t consistent with it still.

Then the short stroke came out (and was killed in the process - even with heat I find them impossible to remove without damage). Liner and slip washer back in, no real improvement.

Tonight I had another go, ended up bunging in a random spring with an old top hat and a HW guide that fitted nicely, ME consistent at 11 ft/lb with JSB RS. And I could actually shoot it, hooray…

I think Nick’s kits are excellently made, and I’ve had great results with them in the past, but I think the combination of the kit and new seal all at once has upset the balance of things.

Next up is more testing to see if I can actually shoot it. If not it’ll be TBT back in with a standard seal, which I think might actually be the golden recipe as that’s what they’re designed for.

Springers can be bloody frustrating and complex for such apparently simple things…

Hi Sam
Yes changing too many things at once, makes it really hard to quantify, what difference the changes made

I find springers intriguing.
I really want to take my time with this one, as when they're done, I easily lose interest
Plenty yet to try though and no rush
When I get the current setup just right, I'll make another new set of internals up using a different spring set
I did that with a 99, a few years ago and used to swap and change the internals, when I felt like it

Believe it, or not, this is my first ever 97 and I plan to enjoy it

We’ve (nearly) all been there, built it, perfected it, got bored then sold it. Then at some point bought another and started again 🤦🏻‍♂️

I’ve had 2 99’s, 2 95’s, 2 97’s, a 77, 2 Ultra’s, 2 Xocet’s 😂

I like a project, tinkering, building and air rifles are relatively cheap to do that with, I’ve never lost a lot, just recycled money. It’s all good fun and keeps the cogs turning, plus I need something practical to do as my job isn’t.

I’m slightly fancying another 97, and/or 99!

...and sell it!
I'll sell them when I've had my enjoyment with them
The majority of my enjoyment with springers, is tuning them

Factory springers are ten a penny, so always available if I fancy another
This just happens to be one I've never had

Have to say this has been a informative read. As somebody that has purchased a BSA Supersport .22 from the 1980's. I intend to bring it back to it's former glory, the stock and bluing could do with redoing. It's already had a new breech seal installed. When I asked the gun shop I bought it from, if it was full power, they weren't sure, so I'm paying for them to service it. They will use standard parts. Will be interesting to see what it does over the chronograph.

If it groups well and it's decent power I will leave it standard. If I think it has more potential then I will install either a Welsh Willy kit or TbT kit.

Do we think a seal can be too efficient, and then require spring shortening to such a degree that you lose the preload and the shot cycle suffers? Or an entirely different spring is required.

It could be the case with a short stiff spring Sam

Looks like the 97 is shaping up well.
Work cancelled today so thought I'd nip over the club and try it

Scope was off another rifle so took 2 standing shots at the 10 yard plate then adjusted, 2 at the 15 then adjusted, then 2 at the 20 and adjusted. Sat down and zeroed at my chosen distance of 31 with about 4 shots. Next shot took the 55 yard knockdown. Then had a play about at the other knockdowns and spinners. Final 2 shots were at the 45 yard plate. First shot in a bit of clear space, the next shot at the first pellet strike

Still not really liking the thumbhole stock, but it's functional, expecially for standers, where it's very stable.
Trigger needs a bit of refinement as the break is a bit heavier than I'd like. But other than that, its looking very promising

i put britseals in my tx and prosport and both guns went up in power , i took the power washers out of both guns ,only had one in each gun ,had to take the slip washer out of one gun and fit a thinner one and now both guns perfect , highly reccomend the britseals tho

Yeah I've had good experiences with all the rifles I've used them in

I want to take things slowly with this 97, to fully assess the difference each change makes, but I reckon I'll fit one eventually

I replaced my seal in my secondhand HW99 (2009 vintage) with a Britseal as the old seal was knackerd (see photo) only to find the power was all over the place from 5 to just under 10 even brought a tbt kit and spring made no difference brought a new breech seal still no difference in the end I put the factory seal from my HW98 in it and it cured the problem and the Britseal in the HW98 with no issues so I guess it was a incompatibility problem both guns are now about the 10.5 mark
